He’s the sixth generation of a Barossa winemaking family, but Trent Burge’s destiny was not written in stone. Cellarhand work was initially just a handy job opportunity for an energetic young 18 year old. But hands-on, from the ground up, winemaking worked its way under his skin. Trent developed a deep respect for the land, the fruit, the growers and winemakers. The final pieces came together around family meals, when his father would dust off bottles of luscious aged shiraz from his personal cellar. The rich rewards of hard labour awakened our boy’s Barossa-born heart. Lifeblood Shiraz is Trent Burge’s heartfelt tribute to the signature variety of his home soil. Crafted only from vintages of exceptional promise, this is a love letter to region, variety and home.

Vintage: 2018

Variety: 100% Shiraz

Vintage Summary: High Winter rainfall preceded a warm November and December, resulted healthy vine canopies and early flowering. Annual rainfall was less than the long term average. Timely rain and an Indian Summer slowed down the pace of ripening allowing flavours and baume’s to develop. The resulting harvest was a good, healthy yield with high quality fruit. Bunches with small berries of intense flavour and colour, along with excellent tannins and natural acidity.

Winemaking & Maturation: The hand picked fruit was fermented in 5 Tonne wax lined concrete open fermenters with waxed wooden heading down board to keep the cap submerged, to aid in colour and tannin extraction. 7 days on skins , fermentation temperature peaks at 26 deg C prior to Basket Pressing. Matured for 22 months in a combination of 100% French oak hogsheads

Tasting Notes: Deep dark inky red/black colour. A complex combination of charry french oak with ripe mixed berries and dark cocoa powder. A classic dry grown Barossa Shiraz, rich , ripe and powerful with a firm tannin backbone. This wine is made for aging, with high fruit intensity and structured palate giving this wine the potential to age for 20 years. Best drinking window will be 2023 - 2033.
